The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the
BRONZE STAR MEDAL
SECOND LIEUTENANT JOHN H. ADMIRE
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
For heroic achievement in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as Platoon Commander with Company M, Third Battalion, Third Marines, Third Marine Division on 9 December 1966. While participating in a company size search and clear mission on Hill 200, Second Lieutenant ADMIRE displayed exceptional courage and bold initiative when his platoon came under intense automatic rifle and machine gun fire from a well entrenched enemy force. He immediately moved forward where he could observe and direct the fire of his own men at the enemy positions, enabling them to gain fire superiority. While his platoon continued to direct suppressive fire at the enemy, Second Lieutenant ADMIRE organized the evacuation of the wounded. He repeatedly exposed himself to the heavy enemy fire in order to direct the removal of casualties to a relatively safe area for further evacuation by helicopter. As the evacuation aircraft attempted to land, the enemy concentrated heavy fire in the landing zone, preventing the helicopter form landing. Unhesitatingly, Second Lieutenant ADMIRE requested aircraft strikes on the enemy while directing 3.5” white phosphorous rocket rounds to mark the enemy positions. With complete disregard for his own safety, he moved among his men directing their fire and offering them encouragement. By his heroic actions, he was instrumental in saving the lives of numerous Marines and contributed significantly to the successful accomplishment of his unit’s mission Second Lieutenant ADMIRE’s exceptional professional skill, courageous actions and selfless devotion to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the united States Naval Service.
Second Lieutenant ADMIRE is authorized to wear the combat “V”
