The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the

BRONZE STAR MEDAL to

CORPORAL EDWARD J. BROWN

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

for service as set forth in the following

CITATION

"For heroic achievement in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as a Machine Gunner with Company M, Third Battalion, Third Marines, Third Marine Division. On11 November 1968,Company M was conducting a search and destroy operation northwest of Cam Lo in Quang Tri Province when the Marines came under intense mortar fire and sustained several casualties.  Completely disregarding his own safety, Lance Corporal Brown fearlessly exposed himself to the heavy volume of fire as he assisted wounded companions to a landing zone for medical evacuation.  When the landing zone came under small arms and automatic weapons fire from an advancing enemy force, Lance Corporal Brown accompanied by his assistant gunner, ignored the hostile round impacting nearby, and remained in a dangerously open area to deliver suppressive fire on the North Vietnamese Army unit, accounting for numerous hostile casualties.  Lance  Corporal Brown's courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty at great personal risk inspired all who observed him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Lance Corporal Brown is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.
