The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the

BRONZE STAR MEDAL to

PRIVATE FIRST CLASS DENNIS G. MYERS

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

for service as set forth in the following

CITATION

"For heroic achievement in conjunction with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as a Machine Gunner with Company K, Third Battalion, Third Marines, Third Marine Division.  On 3 March 1968 during a patrol, Company K encountered a North Vietnamese Army force entrenched in fortified positions. Observing several members of his squad pinned down by the intense enemy fire, Private First Class MYERS unhesitatingly advanced beyond friendly lines with a companion to provide covering fire for his comrades. When his machine gun malfunctioned, he resolutely continued to deliver suppressive fire with his .45 caliber pistol, enabling the remainder of his squad to maneuver to a more advantageous position. Throughout the engagement, he repeatedly exposed himself to hostile fire as he personally accounted for two North Vietnamese confirmed killed. Private First Class MYERS' courage bold initiative and steadfast devotion to duty inspired all who observed him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. "
