The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the
SILVER STAR MEDAL (Posthumously) to
Cpl JESSE W. AMEY
United States Marine Corps
For service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
"The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Jesse W. Amey, United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a member of Company I, Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Asan-Adelup Area, Guam, Marianas Islands, 21 July 1944. On the morning of 21 July 1944, Corporal Amey accompanied the leading elements of his platoon in an assault against well- fortified enemy positions. When one of his comrades had been killed, and two others wounded and evacuated, Corporal Amey, with two other men, remained in position in an effort to hold the ground already gained until support could arrive. Under furious rifle and grenade fire, Corporal Amey continued to hold his position alone, although his two comrades had been seriously wounded. Although knowing his position to be untenable, he refused to withdraw until the wounded had been evacuated under the cover of his rifle fire. Before support could arrive, Corporal Amey was killed by enemy rifle fire. His supreme courage and indomitable spirit made it possible for his platoon to hold its position until support could arrive. His exceptional fortitude and conspicuous devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
