The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the

SILVER STAR MEDAL
posthumously to

CORPORAL WILLIAM THOMAS CUMBIE

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

For service as set forth in the following

CITATION:

“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in  action while serving as a Scout Dog Handler with company I, Third Battalion, Third Marines, Third Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 9 February 1969, Corporal Cumbie was acting as Point Man for Company I during a search and destroy operation when he alertly observed a hostile force occupying a well-concealed ambush site. With complete disregard for his own safety, he unhesitatingly shouted a warning to his fellow Marines and commenced directing accurate fire on the enemy. Although aware of the danger involved, he steadfastly remained in his exposed position and continued drawing the attention of the hostile soldiers as his companions deployed to covered fighting positions. While engaged in this selfless task, he was mortally wounded. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and saved numerous Marines from serious injury or possible death. By his courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, Corporal Cumbie contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.”
