conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company
L, Third Battalion, Third Marines, Third Marine Division in connection with
operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 12 January
1969, Lance Corporal Maki, then a Private First Class, was in the point
position during a platoon-sized search and destroy operation in the An Hoa
area when he observed on of the Marine scout dogs detect the possible
presence of the enemy. Reacting instantly, he cautioned his companions and
then fearlessly moved forward alone to investigate. Alertly locating a
hostile ambush site, he unhesitatingly exposed himself to the danger of
enemy fire as he boldly fired upon the North Vietnamese position. The enemy
returned his fire, and although Lance Corporal Maki was seriously wounded,
he steadfastly continued his determined efforts as he stood in full view of
the hostile soldiers to direct his companions toward the ambush site. His
heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were
instrumental in preventing the enemy form inflicting severe casualties upon
his platoon. By his courage, resolute determination and unwavering devotion
to duty in the face of great personal danger, Lance Corporal Maki upheld
the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval
Service.
